Race the River 2014

Campbell River Estuary – Where the Dragon Boats Run Fast and Free

The scenery is just the beginning. With its deep water and protected channel the Campbell River Estuary is perfect for a dragon boat regatta. The 2014 Race the River regatta is on Saturday June 28th

The Youngest Leader

Drummer Jennelle Chipman, 10, leads her team Ladies of the Lake (boat #2) to the finish line. With hand signals and calls she must motivate her crew to paddle at its best. She has to ‘feel’ the boat and gauge its power as it moves through the water.  By being constantly aware of the other dragon boats she knows when it’s best to surge ahead, when to hold steady, and when to peak for the finish. Drumming is a challenge many adults are reluctant to step up to let alone one so young.

Race Day

Another highly successful dragon boat regatta has come and gone!  Race the River 2013 enjoyed a perfect day for fast, close races.  With eight teams competing in the Mixed division and nine in the Ladies, action was non-stop. And it seems that youth might have stolen the show.

The Dragon Riders from the Comox Valley, a youth team of 13 to 18-year-olds, took the bronze in the Mixed Division final, crossing the line just over 2 seconds behind first place finishers, Na’max’sala from Port Hardy.  The Spirit Point Dragons from Saltspring Island edged between to take second.

Triport Dragon Boat Society’s north island teams showed their power in both divisions this year.  As well as Na’max’sala taking gold in the Mixed division, The Dragonslayers took gold in the Ladies while The Triport Warriors took the silver.  River Spirit placed third in a very tight final race.

The day was grand!  Thanks to all our visiting teams, hope to see you back again in 2014!
